The Rural Immersion Internship is an opportunity to experience the day to day life of a rural pastor, and to discern whether or not your call might include serving rural congregations. Intern activities include, but are not limited to: preaching, visitation, working with small groups and children’s ministries, participating in a work camp on the Cheyenne River Reservation, and more as your work alongside pastors.

As an intern, you will:

  • Spend 8-12 weeks working with different congregation(s) each week
  • Engage with clergy who will help you reflect on your experiences and your call to ministry
  • Receive a stipend of $300 per week, plus housing, mileage, and many meals provided
  • Reimbursement for transportation costs of coming to South Dakota will be negotiated

The internship begins in June, 2020.  Specific start date is negotiable.

About the Prairie Lakes Association

The Prairie Lakes Association covers the northeast quadrant of South Dakota. It includes 19 different churches, and is the home of the Prairie Retreat Center, an outdoor ministry in South Dakota. We are within driving distance of the Badlands, the Black Hills, the lakes of Minnesota, and the Missouri River. Some of our churches have a membership as small as 13 while others have memberships over 300. In short, it is a great cross-section of all that rural ministry has to offer.

“The question is always asked by curious travelers who have crossed the Plains at Interstate speeds, “How can you live without the mountains, the ocean, the woods?” But what they are really speaking to is their desire to “get it” right away. The sublime of this place that we the prairie is one of patience and looking. There is no quick fix… If one is to understand the beauty of this place, the old answers just won’t do.”
