Ames UCC: Theologian in Residence 2022

April 23, 2022 - April 24, 2022

Local Church Events

A word from the organizers of Theologian in Residence 2022!:

The best-selling Catholic writer Joan Chittister has written, “What this world needs most right now is a new generation of prophets.” This is especially true as we confront the climate crisis today. Yet, we can no longer wait for others to be the prophets that were needed yesterday. We must find the prophet in each of us. We are the ones who can make a profound difference right now. To answer the urgent call for prophetic action today, this event will focus on what the Hebrew Prophets teach us and what is already being done to act.

This year’s event will open with a national webinar Saturday morning, April 23rd, featuring Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt, Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ; Nellis Kennedy-Howard from Honor the Earth, Rev. Michael Malcolm from People’s Justice Council; and Hector Arbuckle, Ames Climate Action Team. The Saturday afternoon session will focus on what actions individuals and faith communities in Ames and the Tri-Conference area can take to address specific aspects of the Climate Crisis. On Sunday morning April 24th before worship Rev. Brooks will focus on what faith communities can do to care for God’s creation as well as engaging audience questions. During worship he will then provide the sermon “Barefoot Blessings” at Ames UCC church. Program details are provided below. Registration is required for both the national webinar event and the Ames UCC/Tri-Conference sessions. Both the national and Ames UCC/Tri-Conference sessions are free and open to the public.

Registration is required to attend these events, but there is no charge for registration. Because a portion of the sessions will be part of a national United Church of Christ webinar, registration for that portion Saturday morning, April 23rd, will be necessary at the National UCC website.

Registration for the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning events will be through the Ames UCC church. All sessions will be available via Zoom. To register for the Saturday after- noon and Sunday morning sessions, go to the Amesucc.org website and click on the TIR event tab at the top of the home page. Scroll down to the registration instructions.

Our program is free and open to the public. However, donations are gratefully accepted to help support our programs. Donations can be made online when you register, or you can send a check to “TIR Program: Ames UCC Church” at 217 Sixth St., Ames, IA 50010.
